Would you know what to do if someone had a seizure? Our awareness courses cover everything from recognising a seizure, to correct handling procedures. We also train in delivery of emergency medications (midazolam, diazepam & paraldehyde).

Epilepsy Awareness

Epilepsy Awareness & Administration of Buccal (Oromucosal) Midazolam
(for the treatment of prolonged and / or clusters seizures)

Designed for:

People supporting a person with epilepsy who has been prescribed buccal midazolam for use in the event of a seizure-related emergency at home or in the community.

 

Content:

  • This course will cover all the content listed in the Epilepsy Awareness course above

  • What is midazolam, including different preparations / concentrations

  • Indications for the use of midazolam

  • Appropriate doses

  • Benefits of using buccal midazolam

  • Recognising signs of respiratory depression

  • Possible difficulties in administration (e.g. excessive salivation, injury to mouth)

  • Potential side effects

  • Actions if buccal midazolam is ineffective

  • Identifying and using individual's buccal midazolam care plan

  • Secure storage and safe disposal

  • Duty of care / responsibility and accountability

  • Practical demonstration using visual aids

  • Opportunity to work through the correct procedure and demonstrate correct measurements

  • When to seek medical help

  • Awareness of the potential for misuse

  • Awareness of relevant local policies

  • Interactive case discussions

Refresher: Epilepsy Awareness & Administration of Buccal (Oromucosal) Midazolam
(for the treatment of prolonged and / or clusters seizures)

Designed for:

People supporting a person with epilepsy who has been prescribed buccal midazolam for use in the event of a seizure-related emergency at home or in the community. Attendees must already hold a valid certificate in the administration of midazolam and we recommend getting in touch to discuss acceptable criteria if your previous training was delivered by another provider.

  • This course will cover all the content listed in the Epilepsy Awareness & Administration of Buccal Midazolam course, listed above, but in a more concise manner. 

  • Quick overview of the latest developments in the field of epilepsy

  • A more in depth look at the ILAE seizure classification system

  • Attendees will receive any relevant new resources from the main midazolam manufacturers

Administration of Rectal Diazepam / Paraldehyde

Duration: 1.5 hours

Certificate valid for 2 years

Designed for:

People supporting a person with epilepsy or who has been prescribed rectal diazepam or paraldehyde to treat emergency seizures in the community.

This course can be added on to the full day Epilepsy Awareness & Administration of Buccal (Oromucosal) Midazolam course for a reduced fee. If accessing this course as a stand alone module, it may be necessary to demonstrate alternative certification in epilepsy awareness in order to successfully complete the assessment. Please contact us for a quote.
